Thursday Listening Party

If you can hear heaving sobs issuing from the AMT bunker, it’s because one of our favourite podcasts, the Guardian’s Media Talk, is coming to an end. (Unless one of you is a generous benefactor and fancies having Media Talk in your own entertainment stable? Save Media Talk!) I was on the last episode. But, in a ‘Clap if you believe in fairies’ moment, there may be a glimmer of hope for its future… Read here to find out.

As one podcast ends, another begins: Leila Johnston from Shift Run Stop has launched a new podcast, Hack Circus, and for its inaugural episode she and I (and her dog) met up in a pub and had a big old chat, which you can hear on iTunes or not-iTunes. Or right here:

I love a bit of true crime, so I’ve been blasting through the newish podcast Criminal. Counterfeiters! Murderous owls! Polygraphs! Flytrap thieves! The production is classy and the show is very interesting and fun (funteresting?).

Remaining on the crimey theme: Unfictional is perennially excellent but the ‘Murder In Jersey’ episode was particularly excellent. It involves two brothers looking into their grandfather’s murder, unsolved since 1970. The episode is no longer on the main feed, but you can still find it elsewhere eg here and here.

And for a further gutpunch, I direct you to the ‘Long Shadow’ episode of Strangers, about the repercussions of a shooting up the Empire State Building in 1997.

Frankly, I haven’t felt this bereft since I watched Dear Zachary (which you can watch here if you are in the mood for Devastating Emotions).

After all that sorrow and tragedy, I’m hitting RISK! for a bawdy pick-me-up, and I suggest you do too.

In case you’re interested in podcasters talking shop, we’ve started putting up the full-length interviews we conducted for our podcasting documentary on Radio 4. My thoughts on talking to Maron, Savage, Mars etc al (and my brother) are here.

Long-term AMT listeners will already be familiar with my thoughts upon My So-Called Life, but I aired them at greater length on Little Atoms. You’re very welcome.

Then, in the May edition of the Sound Women podcast, I reflect upon My Brilliant Career coughspluttercough, and also learn about prison radio, headed notepaper campaigns, and how YouTube stars are made (talking about hair, apparently):

I’ve spent much of this week doing a large and very fiddly drawing with a tiny dip pen last used by my grandfather at school. My eyes were busy, but my ears were not, so it was an optimal time redress how lately I’ve been slacking on This American Life-listening duties – so many other shows are influenced by This American Life, it made me take the actual This American Life for granted. But blasting through several episodes, including this week’s Call for Help, brought me right back in. I’ll never leave you again, This American Life!

I chased this with an episode of TLDR featuring Alex Tew, who in 2005 created the Million Dollar Homepage whilst sitting around waiting to go to university. Nowadays the site is a bit of a joke for being a relic of a past internet age, and for being more than 20% dead links – but to me, it’s incredible that it is still nearly 80% undead, and still hauling in money. While I was waiting to go to university, I learnt Italian, which earnt me zero dollars and I’ve since forgotten nearly 100% of it. You win this round, Alex Tew!

Drawing with a dip pen takes a REALLY long time, so I also blasted through two series of Radio 4’s The Ideas That Make Us, which is the kind of radio show that makes you feel cleverer as you listen (like In Our Time) whilst being very fun (unlike In Our Time). (Sorry, In Our Time. Melvyn Bragg, please don’t enact revenge on Bettany Hughes for my offence.)

Recently Woman’s Hour ran a belter of a fashion special, featuring such legends as Celia Birtwell, and Grayson and Philippa Perry; there was the serious business of sustainable clothing and the Rana Plaza disaster, and the less serious business of stripes and how they used to be the pattern of the devil. The more you know, eh?

Lastly, if you’re interested in how writing for TV goes:
Greg Jenner, historical consultant for Horrible Histories, discusses writing historical documentaries and dramas.
Brent Forrester, who has worked on such shows as The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Mr Show and the American version of The Office, talks about the sweaty business of comedy writing.

Several of our noise-making pals have been busy lately:

• Star of AMT252 Isy Suttie has begun a new series of her Radio 4 show Isy Suttie’s Love Letters. The first series was several kinds of delightful, so do yourself a favour and listen to series 2 episode 1 here.
• Dave Pickering of Getting Better Acquainted and Stand Up Tragedy is producing a new podcast with Living Streets for National Walking Month, and the first episode is available here. Take it out for a stroll!
• Over the years of AMT, my (at best) ambivalence towards sport cannot have escaped you. Turns out, all it took to get me interested was Jesse Thorn teaming up with Roman Mars to talk about socks.

Martin and I were on holiday driving around a desert sparsely populated with small towns, and when you’re in a desert sparsely populated with small towns, the most suitable soundtrack is of course Welcome to Night Vale.

Also on the subject of driving around in deserts is this extraordinary story of reclusive billionaires, legal wrangling and Mormons on Love + Radio.

If you’re a fan of the Jimi Hendrix cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘All Along the Watchtower’, allow me to direct you to this great account of how the record came about, including a hilarious clip of founding Rolling Stone Brian Jones contributing a piano part, before being relegated to the vibraslap.

This week, prepare yourselves for a FRIDAY listening party, because tomorrow, 4th April 2014, the first part of our documentary Podcasting: The First Ten Years will be on Radio 4 at 11am British Summer Time. The second part goes out at 11am on 11th April, so mark your calendar accordingly; and each episode will be available on BBC iPlayer shortly thereafter. A lot of people have been asking whether a show about podcasting will be podcasted, but that would be TOO obvious (ie we don’t know whether it will, but shall let you know if it is).

If you like podcasts, we’ll wager you’ll enjoy the documentary because we interview some really top notch podcasters, including: Marc Maron; Richard Herring; Jeffrey and Joseph of Welcome to Night Vale; Keith and the Girl; Roman Mars of 99% Invisible; Betty in the Sky; Ewan Spence of the ESC Insight and the Edinburgh Fringe Show; Theresa Thorn of One Bad Mother; Pete Donaldson of The Football Ramble; Adam Curry; and John Oliver, my brother Andy Zaltzman, and producer Chris Skinner of the Bugle. We also speak to the man who invented the word ‘podcasting’, Ben Hammersley, who frankly doesn’t seem all that proud of it. Cheer up, Ben; nobody seems to have any better suggestions yet.

Dave makes podcasts including Getting Better Acquainted, and you should definitely listen because hooray, it is Personal Season! In episode 154 Dave talks to his dad about open relationships and losing his virginity, which I could not discuss with my own dad without a hellmouth opening and devouring the whole of south-east England.

It was a particular treat to hear AMTpal John Grindrod on there discussing his recent book Concretopia, which makes mid-20th century town planning a thousand times more interesting than you thought it could be.
Fun fact: I fainted at John Grindrod’s book launch. Concretopia = the new Beatlemania! Luckily I did not faint whilst listening to the podcast, but I have decided not to attend any more book launches immediately after donating blood.

Martin the Sound Man has been making musical noises again: this month’s Sound of the Ladies podcast is a cover of ’17’ by Youth Lagoon.

Noises from abroad:

• I don’t have children. I don’t have plans to have children. I have been filled to the brim with child-chat by family and friends who have had children. So I would not have expected myself to be keen to listen to a podcast about having children and raising children. BUT! I love the One Bad Mother podcast. If you don’t have children, it’s two people talking very entertainingly and frankly about important personal stuff; if you do have children, it’s a beacon of ‘Oh thank Christ it wasn’t just me who thinks that’. Get on it.

• When I want to blot out journeys on London transport but I really can’t decide what I’m in the mood for, the Dinner Party Download is perfect because it contains a bit of everything: chitchat, culture, history, facts, food, drink, interviews, etiquette, music… It’s the bento box of podcasts.

• On a more melancholy tip, there’s the new episode of The Theory of Everything: When You’re Lonely, Life is Very Long.

• If you liked Jon Ronson on AMT190, you’ll love him on WTF. I’ve never heard Marc Maron sound so happy to be talking to someone!
