I think the loos at Crystal Palace were actually supposed to be quite good. The Victorianist (http://thevictorianist.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/spending-penny-or-first-public-flushing.html) says they were the first ever public loos. This page (http://www.studygroup.org.uk/Articles/Content/80/The%20Great%20Exhibition%20of%201851.html) gives the number of loos (and also figures about the food sold) and says they were used by 14% of visitors.
As for Queen Victoria opening the exhibition, twice, of course she did – it was one of Prince Albert’s pet projects, and he was the president of the organising committee.
