fugitive pets

How gutting for Rowan to be so blatantly reminded that his joint is less fun than the bog in a retirement castle:

The other day, one of our ferrets escaped. After hours of searching he was eventually found in the washroom of a local old people’s home. So Helen and Olly, answer me this: have you ever had pets run away? And did you get them back again?

Rowan, how clearly I remember the day when our two dogs and cat walked across America just to find their way home…the things they must have seen! The perils they faced! The geological features they posed next to!

However, readers, if you’ve experienced the less fictitious loss and return of a pet, by all means share with Rowan by means of the comments.

My rabbit managed to get next door once, through a hole in the fence. On being called, he came very excitedly over to the fence, pushed his nose through as if to say “look where I am!” and merrily hopped off again to eat their plants. The neighbours weren’t in, so we couldn’t do anything except watch him as he spent a pleasant few hours devouring their foliage. Naughty little thing. He was very pleased with himself.

My hamster escaped once and made a hole in the skirting board before making a nest in my mums handbag out of tissues. Was she shocked when she opened it

When I was 7, I returned home from a holiday in Canada to discover that my turtle’s tank was turtle-less (the green scooper-net was in the tank, leaned against the rim.
I ran downstairs in tears and told my mother that my turtle was dead. She asked where he was and I said “he’s gone to heaven!!” While she tried to explain her ideas of the soul and earthly remains, my brother laughed and laughed at my simple mind.
30 minutes later, I found my turtle slowly making his poorly-planned getaway under my bed. I was so pleased and ran to tell my brother, who was crying, after having realized that he’d left his snake’s warming rock on the whole time we were away and had fried his beloved pet.
