Hi, Helen and Ollie. Just listened to the voodoo doll part of this episode and I felt the need to pause it and write to you. When I heard the description of Big Deb, my first thought was, “she sounds autistic.” Her difficulties in understanding social cues such as standing too close, talking too loud, and her habits of repeating the same phrases, as well as pretty much all of the other descriptions, are markers for ASD. I’m sure the caller was annoyed, but I wonder if she was ever curious about Big Deb’s background and neurology? The way she then partnered up with her friend to have a good laugh at Big Deb’s expense is the exact kind of bullying behavior that kids on the spectrum experience in school every day. I felt for Big Deb in this story, and I wish you had brought up this view of the situation. Though I appreciate that you all said they went too far, I think it was more malicious and self-centered than that.
